News Release: Madison County Sheriff's Office
Madison County Sheriff Ben Stewart reports that on Friday morning December 20, 2013 at 3:15 AM deputies of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office were on routine patrol and observed a female who was barefooted holding a pair of boots running towards them in the highway frantically waving her arms. The Officers were traveling North on Overstreet near the intersection of Wakulla Way in Greenville.
Deputies further observed a green Chevrolet truck parked in the ditch that was occupied by a male later identified as (Ricky Bernard Howard of Lamont, FL) sitting behind the steering wheel.
The female appeared to be obviously scared and upset with visible injuries to her face. Deputies immediately made contact with Howard and detained him while inquiring as to what had taken place. During the investigation it was learned that the female was given a ride by Howard several hours earlier and was supposed to be taken home, however Howard refused and continuously drove down several different dirt roads. Howard reportedly would stop and try to convince the victim to have sex with him. The victim refused each of Howards advances.
The victim reported that at one point Howard began to repeatedly strike her in the head and face area with a closed fist nearly knocking her out. The victim reported that she was able to escape the truck and crawled underneath it to hide from Howard and that’s when she saw the headlights from the deputies patrol vehicle approaching and decided to run towards them for help.
Howard was placed under arrest without further incident. The victim refused any medical treatment and requested deputies take her home.
