Local high school students are celebrating their 1st place win at a science competition this weekend.
10 students from Maclay School's Science Bowl Team competed in the North Central Florida Regional Science Bowl in Gainesville.
They battled against 17 other teams from schools across the state.
5 of the students will now get the chance to compete against 68 other high school teams in Washington D.C. in April.
"They enjoy learning about science, they enjoy gaining more knowledge and they have fun competing against each other and so, they just did it to have some fun," said teacher Matt Schnippert.
The Maclay School Science Bowl Team is made up of 4 seniors, 5 juniors and 1 sophomore, and they practice every day during lunch. Only one of the students on the team is a female.
