Man Killed in Woodville ATV Crash

UPDATED 8.14.2012 by Julie Montanaro

An ATV crash in Woodville cost a longtime lineman his life. Lewis Gray died in a late night accident less than a block from his house.

A bouquet of flowers stands next to a dogwood tree. It marks the spot where 56 year old Lewis Gray lost his life. Friends say he died in the driveway of a home on Elena Drive just a few doors down from his own house.

"They came around the corner and I don't know if Mr. Gray lost control of the buggy or what exactly happened, but he come off the road and caught a dogwood tree and passed away there on the scene," friend Steven Bulloch said.

The Leon County Sheriff's Office says Gray was killed at about 11:45 Saturday night. A passenger on that 2012 Polaris, Cliff McCord, walked away unhurt. The men were friends, neighbors and worked together at Talquin Electric.

Gray worked at what they call T-2 on Crossway Road in Tallahassee for more than 38 years. The journeyman had just recently been promoted to chief lineman.

"He was ... he had always been talking about he wasn't going to work but two or three more years and then retire, so, it's like I said, hard to understand," co-worker Dean Carr said.

Deputies are still investigating the crash. Neon orange paint shows where the ATV ran off the road. Deputies say neither man was wearing a helmet or seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Steven Bulloch not only lost a friend that day, the crash happened in his front yard. He still can't quite believe it.

"He was a great guy ... loving, caring ... he'd do anything for anybody that he could, you know, bend over backwards to help anybody do anything in the world," Bulloch said. "It's hurt everybody in the community, everybody involved and everybody is dealing with a lot of pain and suffering right now."

The passenger on that ATV did not want comment on the crash.

Funeral services for Lewis Gray are set for Thursday at 10am at Culley's Funeral Home on Riggins Road in Tallahassee. Burial will follow at Woodville White Church Cemetery.
