STARKE, Fla. (AP) -- A convicted child molester who sexually assaulted and murdered a 10-year-old central Florida girl in 1990 has been put to death at the Florida State Prison.
Elmer Carroll was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. Wednesday following an injection at the state penitentiary at Starke, Gov. Rick Scott's office said.
The 56-year-old inmate was convicted of first-degree murder and sexual battery in the death of Christine McGowan. The girl lived with her family next door to a halfway house for homeless men where Carroll was staying in Apopka.
During Carroll's two decades on death row, his lawyers argued he was too mentally ill to stand trial or be subjected to the death penalty. The Supreme Court denied the petition.
Carroll previously had been imprisoned twice for indecent assault on a child.

STARKE, Fla. (AP) -- The U.S. Supreme Court has denied a stay of execution for the man convicted of raping and strangling a young girl 22 years ago near Orlando.
The court denied Elmer Carroll's application on Wednesday, hours before he is scheduled to die by lethal injection at the Florida State Prison in Starke.
The petition was the final attempt to stop the execution. Carroll's lawyers argued he should have been considered mentally ill at the time of the murder.
The 56-year-old man was indicted on a count of first-degree murder and sexual battery for the rape and murder of 10-year-old Christine McGowan in November 1990. The girl's stepfather found her dead in her bedroom.
Carroll was living at a halfway house for homeless men next to the girl's home in Apopka.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- A 56-year-old man convicted of raping and strangling a 10-year-old girl is set to be executed this week.
Elmer Carroll is scheduled to be put to death Wednesday at Florida State Prison in Starke. He was convicted of the 1990 murder of Christine McGowan, who lived with her family next door to a suburban Orlando halfway house where Carroll was living.
Carroll was convicted of breaking into the family's home, raping and killing the girl, and then stealing her stepfather's pickup truck. The missing truck was found on the side of a busy state road, and Carroll was found walking nearby.
Police found blood and other physical evidence on Carroll that linked him to the murder.
His attorneys have tried to block the execution, saying Carroll is too mentally ill.
ATLANTA (AP) -- A federal appeals court has rejected a Florida
inmate's bid to overturn his death sentence for the 1990 rape and
strangulation of a 10-year-old girl.
Elmer Leon Carroll claimed it would be unconstitutional to
execute him because he is mentally retarded and was mentally ill
when he killed Christine McGowan of Apopka in her bedroom.
The Supreme Court has barred execution of the mentally retarded,
but various psychiatrists and psychologists who examined Carroll
disagreed on the extent of his impairment and whether he was
competent to understand what he had done.
A panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday
rejected Carroll's petition in absence of a Supreme Court decision
barring execution of mentally ill prisoners.
