Pensacola, FL (AP) - A Florida Panhandle man has been sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting a bar patron during a robbery.
An Escambia County judge gave 23-year-old Marvin Jamel Smith two
life sentences Wednesday, after a jury found him guilty of robbery
with a firearm and the first-degree murder.
Authorities say Smith and 21-year-old Brandon Davis went to the
Oakcrest Lounge in Pensacola in October 2009. Both men fired shots,
and 25-year-old Jared Ortiz was fatally hit. Ballistics tests
showed Smith's gun fired the fatal shot.
Davis previously pleaded guilty to a lesser second-degree murder
charge as part of an agreement to testify against Smith.
Two other men who helped Smith and Davis wipe down their getaway
vehicle avoided charges by cooperating with authorities.
