Students at Astoria Elementary School got a surprise visit Friday morning by children's TV character Martha and Tallahassee Mayor John Marks.

Mayor Marks made his way to the school to read the Martha Speaks book to several first and fourth grade students. As part of the 'Meet Martha' program, students have been partnered together to help increase their vocabulary and love for reading.

4th Grade Student Jackson Burks says, "They write them in books not in shows so if the kids watch the shows, and like them they'll be more inspired to read the books."

4th Grade Student Naya River says, "I'm happy that Mayor Marks came here today because we learned a lot and had a lot of fun."

Mayor Marks got involved today because of his Raising Leaders Program, where he reads to students to help them understand the importance of reading.
