MIAMI (AP) -- The chief of Miami-Dade Public Schools has been named superintendent of the year.
The Florida Association of District School superintendents announced Alberto Carvalho as the state's top district educational leader Wednesday.
The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/191HVYc ) reports that under Carvalho's leadership, graduation rates and scores on state assessments have increased.
The superintendent is now in the running for the nation's top award for school district chiefs.
Carvalho has run Miami-Dade schools since 2008.
