Tallahassee, FL - Your Own Utilities joined local residents, officials and dignitaries Saturday to kick off Neighborhood REACH in the Greater Frenchtown area. This Energy Smart Plus (e+) initiative, first launched in the Bond Community last fall, is designed to help City of Tallahassee utility customers save energy, water and money by providing free home energy and water-saving improvements.
Through the two-year pilot program, participating residents in Greater Frenchtown and other selected income-based neighborhoods will receive free in-home energy assessments, energy-efficiency measures, hands-on education and energy and water-saving items, such as Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs), faucet aerators, new air filters and reduced-flow showerheads.
Using a door-to-door approach, REACH teams will conduct home energy assessments and install energy-efficiency items such as winterization kits, heating and air-conditioning filters, water heater wraps, water-efficient faucet aerators and showerheads, refrigerator thermostats, wall plate thermometers and door sweeps. Crews will begin in the northwest vicinity and continue through Griffin Heights, Springfield, Frenchtown, Goodbread and South Ruediger/Raa areas. Work is expected to be completed in early fall.
“The Neighborhood REACH program will have a real impact in our community by helping families reduce their home energy use and save money,” said Tallahassee Mayor John Marks. “We were able to lower electric and natural gas rates for customers this month due to decreased fuel costs and other market factors. This program provides even more assistance and complements our many other Energy Smart Plus (e+) programs, such as energy-saving grants and rebates.”
After completing the Greater Frenchtown area project, REACH teams will continue their efforts in selected income-based neighborhoods to assist a total of approximately 3,000 customers. Each phase begins with a kickoff event, where residents can schedule home energy assessments, learn about the program and related City services and take advantage of other Energy Smart Plus (e+) incentives. In the weeks following the kickoff, Neighborhood REACH teams will visit each home in the neighborhood to provide the energy-saving improvements and related services.
