New research shows octupi found in our area are some of the smartest in the world. Dr. Gene Alupay of UCLA conducted a study at the Gulf Specimen Lab in Panacea. The results showed that octopus Vulgaris Species is more aware of it's surroundings compared to other species.

"It's very interesting question. Nobody knows, but if you're ever going to study consciousness and how consciousness evolves the octopus is probably one of the best to do that with," said Jack Rudloe, Gulf Specimen Marine Lab.

The Gulf Specimen Marine Lab hopes to become the premier spot for scientists to study octopus.
