The Lafayette Street tunnel was unveiled this morning to a crowd of excited onlookers who say the addition has been 'a long time coming.'

The structure runs under a set of C-S-X railway tracks and safely connects downtown Tallahassee to Apalachee Parkway for those on foot or bike.

Says Harry Reed with Capital Regional Transportation Planning Agency, "It acts as a gateway, not only from this side going into the merchant's area of the Parkway District, but also as part of a project that the county's working on to widen the sidewalk all the way up."

The tunnel was funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Leon County Commissioners say its construction was the 'final link' in connecting residential and commercial areas along Lafayette Street and Apalachee Parkway.
