The Lafayette Street tunnel was unveiled this morning to a crowd of excited onlookers who say the addition has been 'a long time coming.'

The structure runs under a set of C-S-X railway tracks and safely connects downtown Tallahassee to Apalachee Parkway for those on foot or bike.

Says Harry Reed with Capital Regional Transportation Planning Agency, "It acts as a gateway, not only from this side going into the merchant's area of the Parkway District, but also as part of a project that the county's working on to widen the sidewalk all the way up."

The tunnel was funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Leon County Commissioners say its construction was the 'final link' in connecting residential and commercial areas along Lafayette Street and Apalachee Parkway.

These comments serve to illustrate my long held belief that if money is spent for pedestrian or bicycle safety, motorists will resent it and react accordingly.

Maybe you people should get out more and see things. This tunnel was put in place so people could walk down St. Augustine St. under the railway tracks WITHOUT having to walk in the road to get under the tracks. I'm sure the people who use it won't find it a waste of money as it improves safety. And it's only 1o feet long so it's not like a gang could hide in there. Jeesh people, get out more often.

This is a joke. Another wasted tax payer project.

I would like to know the cost of this latest government boondoggle. Seriously, people can't cross the street without a tunnel? I've been crossing streets since I was five years old. I've never had a problem.
