Open House on Historic District Designation Process

Citizens are invited to an open house event tomorrow to provide input on the process to designate Historic Preservation Districts within the Tallahassee city limits. This public event will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers, located on the second floor of City Hall, 300 S. Adams St. One or more members of the Tallahassee City Commission, Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Commission and/or City of Tallahassee Architectural Review Board may be in attendance.

The City has long embraced the benefits of historic designation, both as a benefit to economic development efforts and also as a tool to revitalize Tallahassee's historic areas and structures. While the City has formal procedures in place for a neighborhood to apply to be designated a Historic Preservation District, the Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department is looking to clarify the process, recognizing the potential for varying interests within a given neighborhood contemplating a formal historic designation.

As part of tomorrow's open house event, staff from the Planning Department and City Attorney's Office will offer a brief presentation on the plan for reviewing and amending the historic district designation. Public input will also be taken on both the existing process and possible revisions. The input from citizens will be an important part of the process, which will also include a citizen's work group and review by local historic preservation organizations, the Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Commission, the City's Long Range Planning target issue committee and, ultimately, the City Commission in late 2011.

Information on the existing language in the City's Land Development Code is available at Talgov.com/planning. For more information, please contact the Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Department at 891-6400.
