A strike team of law enforcement agencies from the US Marshals Service, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, and the Perry Police Department, including state probation officers, made surprise face-to-face contact with 17 probationers in what has been labeled by the US Marshals Service as Operation “Season’s Greetings,” a statewide round up of wanted felons. On Thursday, 12/16/10, the round up in Taylor County resulted in the arrests of six felons for new charges that will violate their probation/supervision. The sweep also resulted in the seizure of a stolen four wheel off road vehicle and the discovery of a Meth lab operating in Taylor County. Probation officers from Tallahassee area Circuit 2 and Lake City area Circuit 3 joined forces with the US Marshals Service, Taylor County Sheriff’s Office and the Perry Police Department to ensure supervised offenders were complying with the terms of their probation and not engaging in unlawful activities.

Teams of law enforcement and probation officers targeted offenders on probation wanted for new offenses where such is a violation of their supervision. Home visits by strike team members included making contact with each offender, conducting a status check and a walk-through of the offenders’ residences, and searching the computers of sex offenders.

The Florida Department of Corrections employs approximately 1,930 probation officers to supervise more than 115,000 active probationers on community supervision throughout the state. Probation officers’ duties include making contact with offenders in their homes, at work and at the probation office; monitoring payment of victim restitution and court costs; ensuring that probationers attend court-ordered treatment programs for drug, alcohol and mental health issues; conducting pre-sentence and other investigations for the Court; and answering the Court’s questions regarding supervision programs, statutory provisions, out-of-state transfers, and probation violations.
