Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida Independent College Fund (FICF) today announced the distribution of $75,175 in UPS Scholarship awards to 31 low-income students at private colleges and universities in Florida. Each student received $2,425 that can be used toward tuition and college expenses. The scholarships were made possible by a grant from the UPS Educational Endowment Fund administered by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, D.C.
“ICUF institutions are dedicated to helping all individuals receive an affordable, high-quality education,” said Dr. Ed Moore, president of the Independent Colleges & Universities of Florida. “I thank the CIC and the UPS Foundation for helping us further our mission and I congratulate the outstanding students who received this well-deserved award.”
Nationally, CIC and the UPS Foundation teamed up to provide nearly $1.5 million in student scholarships this year, which will be distributed through state-based private college associations around the country. Students in Florida who received the UPS Scholarships attend Clearwater Christian College, Jacksonville University and the University of Miami.
“Through this national scholarship program, CIC and UPS are delighted to make it possible for 614 talented young men and women across the country to attend the private college or university of their choice,” said Richard Ekman, president of CIC. “By directly assisting students with significant financial need, CIC and UPS are helping a new generation of students achieve their dreams of a college education.”
“UPS is pleased to continue that spirit of giving by partnering with CIC to support thousands of students working to become the leaders of tomorrow by obtaining an education from our nation’s independent colleges,” said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation.
The UPS Scholarships are funded by the UPS Educational Endowment, which is held and administered by CIC. The endowment was established in the 1970s by the UPS Foundation to support programs to benefit underserved populations. Since its inception, the endowment has generated more than $50 million in scholarship support for more than 17,000 students at independent colleges and universities.
