Associated Press Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- More than 500 guns were turned in at Jacksonville's gun buyback event, the first of four similar events this year.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said 539 guns were returned on Saturday. Three other gun buyback events are scheduled for later in the year.

The buyback is completely anonymous and each gun is worth $50.

Authorities say one goal of the program is to get illegal guns off the streets. The program also allows for anyone to report a convicted felon carrying an illegal gun. If the sheriff's office makes an arrest, the anonymous caller can be awarded up to $1,000.
