PANAMA CITY, FLORIDA -- Timothy Sorrell, 63, of Panama City, Florida was indicted Tuesday for the receipt and possession of child pornography, announced United States Attorney Pamela C. Marsh, Northern District of Florida. On January 11, 2011, the Bay County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant on Sorrell’s residence in Panama City to search and seize any computers. The indictment stems from the results of that seizure.

The two count indictment alleges that between November 7, 2007, and January 11, 2011, Sorrell received and possessed child pornography that had traveled in interstate commerce. If convicted, Sorrell faces a sentence of 5 to 20 years imprisonment for receipt of child pornography,
and a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment for possession of child pornography. However, an indictment is merely a formal charge by the grand jury, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Bay County Sheriff’s Office, and was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006, to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual
exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
