PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) --

Employees of one Panhandle county enjoy 13 paid holidays a year.

Escambia County employees' calendar includes every standard
holiday as well as Good Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving,
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. This year, since Christmas and
New Year's fell on Saturday, employees took off Friday and Monday,
creating four-day weekends.

County employees average an additional three to six weeks of paid vacation each year depending on length of service with the county.

The calendar is approved by the county's administrator.

MJM, I agree. US employees on average take fewer days off than any other country. It's also been proven that a better balance creates more productive employees. Over-working people only causes additional stress, increased health issues, marital problems, people randomly shooting people... see where this is going?

Private sector or not...I believe that EVERY County/City/ and State jobs should have these holidays off! I agree with MJM if more people spent more family oriented time then the world would be a better place!

To Anonymous, I understand where you are coming from. Keep in mind we ultimately pay for the private sector jobs as well when we purchase the products they produce whether the product is an object, service, or information. In the US we work very hard and we don't seem to enjoy life a whole lot. I have many friends from other countries who are less prosperous perhaps but enjoy their free time and are able to stay home and raise their children which in my opinion is always the better alternative if it can be done. Also, what good is money if you don't have time to enjoy it?

To MJM - If this were a pricate sector job i would agree with you totally. But this is a county job which means the taxpayers are paying for these extra days....

Let them have the time off. If people spent more time with their families the world would be a better place. Work has a place and so does enjoying what you work for.
