LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- 5-12

Publix Super Markets Inc. is rolling out a companywide coupon policy.

Store officials said Wednesday they hope to reduce customer
confusion regarding coupon redemption when the policy takes effect
May 23.

Currently, the chain's 1,034 stores follow broad guidelines
letting customers use coupons from Publix, the Internet,
manufacturers and competitors. The new guidelines clarify what had
often previously been left up to the interpretation of individual
store employees.

Under the policy, each store will post a list of rival stores
whose coupons are accepted there.

The policy bans use of rival coupons for a percentage off items
or an entire bill and mandates that competitive pharmacy coupons
can only be used for prescriptions.

Ashley Nuzzo, a Tallahassee-based editor of
frugalcouponliving.com, called the new policy "fair."
