Purple Heart Chapter in Panhandle Welcomes Women

NICEVILLE, Fla. (AP) --

The composition of Purple Heart recipients gathering in the Panhandle is a little different these days.

Along with the World War II, Vietnam and Korea veterans -- all
male -- are two Iraq War veterans, at least 20 years younger and
female.

Vietnam veteran Sam Houston is commander of the Niceville
chapter of the Military order of the Purple Heart. He says he hopes
to reach out to more "young warriors" who are coming home and
facing problems familiar to the older generation.

The exchange cuts both ways. One of the women, 24-year-old
Jannette Gonzalez Meireles, says she hopes to get the group on
Facebook.

John,I agree with you, however, this is not nothing new. There are lots of women who have recieved it,and have always recieved it.There were 16 women who got one in ww2 and there is almost 300 who have one now. This article just says that this particular chapter is welcoming them, not that they are starting to give the award to women.

Actually women were wounded in medical stations in the korean war and even back in ww2 .. being wounded in service should count period even if thier position wasn't officialy combat troops. God bless ALL soldiers

This should have been done awhile ago. Valour , Honor , and Courage is not a gender based trait , but an American one. I have seen women serve as distinctly as men , and recognition of Merit is well deserved. Semper Fi.
