TallahasseeVoices: Rating President Ammons & President Barron

Tallahassee, FL -- March 27, 2012 --

TallahasseeVoices is a pro bono internet survey panel sponsored by Kerr & Downs Research with special media support of WCTV. Survey was conducted February 4th to 25th, 2011. 402 of the 5,000 panel members responded. Results are weighted to reflect the demographics of the 90%+ local residents who have access to the internet at home, work, or school.

Leon County residents have significantly different views of the job performance of the presidents of the area’s two major universities:

54% of residents give FSU President Barron excellent or good ratings
19% of residents give FAMU President Ammons excellent or good ratings.

Surprisingly, 31% of residents say they lack information to rate President Barron, yet only 19% say they lack information to rate President Ammons.

TallahasseeVoices founder, Phillip Downs, Ph.D., contends that "Media coverage of FAMU has been focused more on negative issues, while coverage of FSU has been more positive. Since few people have direct involvement in both universities, media influence drives perceptions of the two universities and their presidents."

President & Mrs. Barron are the best thing to happen to FSU since the last National Championship. They have opened their home to countless groups and causes and are very popular with Alums and students. They are involved in student life, faculty life and this community. It is great to have a real Nole at the helm of our University.

Ammons needs to be fired,,,he new all about the hazing and new it was going on when he took the job. He had done NOT one thing to stop it ,,and now a young man has been killed by the B/S ,,,This is uncalled for. Ammons should also be charged as well as the ones who killed this young man .

I don't care for either one, actually. Dr. Ammons did not take care of the hazing. And I just think Barron is too much about money and not about the students. And neither are doing anything about the crime on their campuses. I wrote to a news media about the crime wave - I hope they do a story on both campuses.

Dr.Ammons is hindered to the point of being a non-factor at FAMU by the ongoing conspiracy of silence among peers among staff, faculty and students. If you ask anyone "What happened?" the most numerous responses will include: I wasn't there; I didn't see; I didn't know; or, what are you asking about?

So what was the point in doing this survey if you know that those who you are surveying can't give you an accurate perception of the two parties. You basically asked people to rate someone they don't and probably never have seen, worked with, or been effected by...all they can go off of is media. This was a waste of time. Ask the STUDENTS, TEACHERS, and STAFF of the University next time. If you want to get a community perception then ask a different question such as "How involved do you believe the local Universities are in the community" WCTV, you might want to stop posting these Kerr & Down Research "findings"...

Dr. Ammon's was up for a vote to be fired recently and passed with a 8 - 4 vote by the FAMU Board of Trustees.
