New Bern, NC (AP) - Federal regulators have decided to let
fishermen off the Southeast coast catch several species of fish
that swim in the same waters as red snappers.
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, meeting in North
Carolina, decided Friday to drop an earlier proposal and allow
fishing for grouper, triggerfish, and other species that live in
similar habitats as red snapper.
Plans to ban their catch would have affected an area from
southern Georgia to central Florida.
A ban on red snapper fishing continues in federal waters between
three miles and 200 miles off the coasts of the Carolinas, Georgia
and east Florida.
The fishing restrictions are designed to prevent the overfished
red snapper from disappearing from the region's waters.
