Associated Press Release
LARGO, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities say a Pinellas County Jail inmate stuffed wet toilet paper down his cell mate's throat and strangled him.
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri says 48-year-old Kelly Damon Harding died of asphyxiation early Sunday. The death occurred shortly after 28-year-old Scott Alexander Greenberg told other inmates he planned to be executed on death row rather than spending his life in prison.
The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/14uTDcu ) reports Harding died in the same way Greenberg's girlfriend was killed almost a year ago. Greenberg faced second-degree murder charges in the girlfriend's death.
Authorities say the cell wasn't monitored and the incident occurred minutes before a deputy performed a routine check.
The two became cell mates on Saturday night after being placed in protective custody because of aggressive behavior at the jail.
