South Hamilton Elementary School Will Stay Open One More Year

- Hamilton County, FL - June 12, 2012 -

At Monday's school board meeting parents and teachers won the race against time.

Now the fate of South Hamilton Elementary School in White Springs, Florida rests on its charter application. The school's governing board is racing to convert it to a Charter School before South's doors close forever.

The Hamilton County School Board had planned to close South before the application ever had a chance to be properly evaluated. But now that closure has been postponed for as much as another year.

Now the school board is going back to the drawing board to form a new plan but nothing they can put together will come in time to keep South from opening for the new school year.

"Now we don't have that worry. We don't have that time constraint. We can move forward hand in hand with the Hamilton County School Board," said Helen Miller, White Springs Mayor.

In August, the Department of Education demanded the district close one of its elementary schools following the continued failure of Central Hamilton in Jasper. They voted to close South because it's physically smaller than Central.

Now the school board will vote to either approve or deny the application next month. If they reject it, South Hamilton's Governing Board can appeal to the Department of Education.

According to Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson, 75% of Charter School applications are declined.

I can't speak for the superintendent's high school ranking, but I do know she is a smart business woman; smart enough to try to save the taxpayers' money. The 3 board members who voted against her apparently have enough money and don't care about the employees they are supposed to represent.

Honestly, I wanna pat the 2 who voted to close it on the back... Why would any one not want to save the school board money to make improvements elsewhere? Complain about C schools, complain about admin., say what you want, South Hamilton has turned into a joke the last few years. Parent's run rampant, employee's dont adhere to state standards, and the employee's who try to obey the law, do right by the kids, and help as much as possible get ran off by control freaks. Further more, I want to know of all the people who voted yes to a charter school would honestly take a pay cut from 60 to 20k a year?! They wouldnt. So therefore they begged and begged to keep them open, give them a chance, there is way more going on in this school system that needs to be adressed. The employee's bad mouth the board members and the superintendant, I hope she cleans house before she leaves. You have employee's spending work hours on cell phones, you have an employee who lets kids do her job in the front office, doesn't make anyone sign in, and gives out political camplaign petitions on the job. Parent's curse out employees for following madated state laws, and teachers and employee's have no more control over students or parents than everyone swears Central has. Central has changed into a standup school, and all of those bad mouthing it would only be so lucky to work under Mrs. Zamora, but instead they choose to stay at a school where they can run all over the principle and admin. and other employee's. I hope this gets overturned, the money is needed elsewhere, and if they children are smart and well behaved, that will not change no matter where they go.

Agree 100% ..Glad to see there are people that have minds and realize that what a joke it is to keep this school open. Of course , the new president of the union over stepped her boundries by stating that the employees would be willing to not get a raise for another year in order for South Hamilton to stay open...I don't think that there was a vote by the union members , so maybe it is time to do a recall on the president...I sure would not want this person talking and negioting for me..Good luck in the future.

Make a select few happy but NO RAISES for all employees. Where was the union representation. ONE union representative spoke for all, no vote was taken by the union. Glad I am not in that union. Protect your self and vote this person out of your union cause she sold you down the river and she had no authority to speak for the union. She opened her mouth and inserted her foot. And she is next year's President of your union.

1st, superintendent (there's the spelling, schoolboy) is unintelligent, barely graduated high school. 2nd, a vote to close an A school? Yeah, rid yourself of success, please. 3rd, they tried to ramrod thru the closure, just not organized enough to get it done. HCSB is mostly a joke, as is the adminstration of HC schools. Real leadership is needed.

I cannot speak for the superintendent's ranking when she was in high school; however, I do know that she is a smart businesswoman; smart enough to try to save the taxpayers' money and balance the budget. I suppose the three board members who voted against her have plenty of money and therefore do not care if the employees get raises.

Misleading information....if Central Hamilton doesn't make a C, the board voted in January to close South Hamilton. Grade have not been released so nothing is for sure about the fate of South Hamilton.

At least you know what you are talking about. Hope no one order a celebration party yet. SB has no backbone and they don't care about the employees or tax paying citizens of Hamilton County.

It wasn't the begging and pleading of the community that saved their school. It was the envelope stuffed with cash that they slipped to the gov.

cant blame the supt. for this one her plan would have eliminated the budget deficit and possibly had some money for some long overdue raises shame on the selfserving board members who are now gonna be held responsible for these furloughs that are imminent

they will be the first ones whining about the impending furloughs coming up thanks to three gutless board members,
