State of Florida Provides Update on Preparation for TS Karen

TALLAHASSEE –Today, the State of Florida issued updates on actions agencies are taking to prepare for potential impacts of Tropical Storm Karen. Local state of emergencies have been declared in Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton, Madison, Liberty and Washington counties.

Governor Scott said, “As Tropical Storm Karen continues to disorganize, families should still use today as an opportunity to get ready. Communities along the panhandle are expected to experience heavy rains, and storm surges are predicted for our coastal regions. We’ll continue to work closely with local and federal partners to ensure our communities are safe.”

Agencies throughout state government are taking actions to protect communities. Among many of the agencies:

Agency for Health Care Administration

The Agency for Health Care Administration activated its emergency status system (ESS) in anticipation of Tropical Storm Karen. Facilities are required to update and verify their information, including updating their census, available beds and report any impacts or damage or request assistance.

Department of Economic Opportunity

Conducting outreach with regional businesses to provide information and ensure necessary precautions are taken to protect regional enterprise.

Juvenile Justice

Worked with insurance provider to put contactors on standby should the need arise for immediate repairs to any facilities.

Transportation

Monitoring roadways and will provide real-time updates on road closures.
