MIAMI (AP) -- Florida Gov. Rick Scott is appointing a former legislator and Miami-Dade politician as lieutenant governor and his running mate for 2014.

Scott on Tuesday named Miami-Dade Property Appraiser Carlos Lopez-Cantera to the post. The move comes nearly 10 months after former Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll abruptly resigned.

Lopez-Cantera, called the appointment an "opportunity that could not be ignored, or denied because I'll be representing the entire state."

The 40-year-old Miami Republican served eight years in the Florida Legislature, rising to the position of House Majority Leader from 2010 to 2012. He was elected property appraiser in 2012.

Lopez-Cantera, who was in the real estate business, worked on property tax issues while in the Legislature.

He says that the Scott administration first reached out to him about the position in mid-December.

Scott will make the announcement on Tuesday in Miami, according to two people familiar with matter but who were unauthorized to speak publicly and spoke on a condition of anonymity.

A spokeswoman for Scott refused to confirm the selection of Lopez-Cantera.

Lopez-Cantera, 40, is a former state legislator and an ally of U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.

His appointment comes almost 10 months after Jennifer Carroll abruptly resigned after she was interviewed by law-enforcement authorities about work she once did for a charity that prosecutors have said was a front for a widespread gambling ring. She has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida Gov. Rick Scott is going to name a new lieutenant governor.

Scott posted a message on his Facebook page saying he will make a "major announcement" regarding the vacant position on Tuesday.

Last March then-lieutenant governor Jennifer Carroll abruptly resigned after she was interviewed by law-enforcement authorities about work she once did for a charity that prosecutors have said was a front for a widespread gambling ring. She has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

A Tallahassee lobbyist and political activist last week sued Scott and said he was breaking a state law that requires him to appoint a lieutenant governor.

There has been speculation for weeks about a whole range of potential candidates for the job, including State Sen. Tom Lee and Miami-Dade Property Appraiser Carlos Lopez-Cantera.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida Gov. Rick Scott is being sued over his decision to leave the post of lieutenant governor vacant for nearly nine months.

A Tallahassee lobbyist and political activist on Monday asked the Florida Supreme Court to force Scott to appoint a lieutenant governor within 30 days.

Jennifer Carroll abruptly resigned last March after she was interviewed by law-enforcement authorities about work she once did for a charity that was a front for a widespread gambling ring. She has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

In her lawsuit Barbara DeVane contends that Scott is breaking a state law that requires him to appoint a lieutenant governor.

DeVane told The Associated Press she is filing the lawsuit because it's time for Scott "to follow the law and do his job.
