Miami Looks at Synthetic Bath Salt Ban

Miami, Florida- June 20, 2012-

Miami-Dade commissioners are tentatively approving a move to outlaw the sale of the synthetic drug bath salts.

The drug can make users aggressive and often violent and are easily purchased at convenience stores. The ban is up for final approval next month.

The Miami Herald reports that police told commissioners they have seen an increase in hospital visits by people using bath salts.

The county ordinance would also ban sales or advertising displays for anything structurally similar to a list of banned compounds. Violators could face $500 in fines.

Last year, Gov. Rick Scott signed a law banning bath salts which can be used as an alternative for drugs like cocaine and LSD. Officials say manufacturers have altered the drugs' chemical makeup to make it easier to sidestep laws.
