Tallahassee, FL - May 30, 2012 --
Church members are rallying around a family who lost a young child.
Police say the child died while taking a nap at a Tallahassee day care.
WCTV spoke with a pastor at Restoration Place Church who says that the family members weren't just attendees, they were family.
He called the toddler who died an active and happy child.
Tallahassee Police say they were called to the "I'm Precious Too Learning Center" at 2304 Old Saint Augustine Road.
Officers say the child took a nap around 12:20 yesterday afternoon. When the child was checked on at 2:00, the child was found unresponsive.
Authorities say Leon County EMS and the Tallahassee Fire Department were called and performed CPR.
Police are not releasing the name or age of child at this time.
Pastor Michael Smith, Restoration Place Executive Pastor, says, "I'm still in shock. As a parent with four young children under the age of eleven, you never ever want to get a phone call from anywhere saying that your child is in danger, not even that your child has passed away. So, I'm in shock. We all have lost sleep."
Pastor Smith says those at the church are trying to help the family of the child as best as they can.
WCTV spoke to the owner of the daycare. He told me that his heart and prayers go out to the child's family.
Officer David Northway says forensic units are investigating the death.
He says anytime there's an unexplained death or unattended death--meaning not in a hospital--no matter the age, they treat the deaths in the same manner. Officer Northway says in all cases they have to rule out the possibility of foul play.
We'll pass along any further details when they become available.
