The Tallahassee Police Department is making its final preparations for a mid-November Accreditation Assessment visit in the Department's continuing efforts to provide contemporary police services to the Tallahassee community.
The Tallahassee Police Department received its initial accreditation in 1986 and has successfully maintained national accreditation since then.
The Tallahassee Police Department currently complies with over 460 standards in order to maintain accreditation status. Chief Dennis Jones said, “National accreditation recognition is highly prized in the law enforcement community, but is more important to the citizens of Tallahassee, as it confirms their department complies with professional law enforcement standards.”
A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive November 13th, 2010, to examine the Tallahassee Police Department's management, operations, policy and procedures, and support services.
The assessment team is composed of public safety practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other locations where compliance can be witnessed.
The CALEA assessors for this assessment are: Retired Major John Sidwell (Kansas) and Chief Mark Palmer (Connecticut).
Once the CALEA assessors complete their review of the agency, they will make a recommendation to the full CALEA Commission, who will then decide if the agency is to be granted re-accreditation status.
As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session. The session will be held Monday, November 15, 2010, at 7:00PM, in the Tallahassee Room located on the second floor of City Hall, 300 South Adams Street.
