PRNA sponsors National Trails Day on Saturday with hikes and bike rides
This Saturday, June 2, is the 20th annual celebration of National Trails Day, billed as "America's Largest TRAILgating Party." In recognition of the special day, the City of Tallahassee's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department (PRNA) is sponsoring several hiking and cycling events. All events will take place starting at 9 a.m. at the Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park (gate A), located off North Meridian Road at 1275 Miller Landing Road.
Local activities, organized by the Apalachee Chapter of the Florida Trail Association, include the following:
9 a.m. - Florida Trail Association volunteers will lead a 2.5-mile trail hike. To reserve a spot on the hike or for more information, contact Karen Berkley at (850) 570-5740.
9 a.m. - Capital City Cyclists will lead a 6-mile all-ability bike ride on double-track and 1-hour intermediate bike ride on single-track. Bring your own bike and helmet; if you don't have a bike and/or helmet, a limited number are available by contacting Chuck Goodheart at (850) 933-6631.
10 a.m. and 11 a.m. - the Northwest Florida Water Management District will give two free wagon tours of the park, including a description of the park's features and the benefits of prescribed burns. Seating will be first-come, first served, with 25 seats available for each of the two tours.
The City maintains over 70 miles of trails, part of a park inventory of 3,540 acres of both active and passive parkland. Trails range from short paved walkways through urban parks to longer multi-use trails shared by mountain bikers, fitness enthusiasts and serious runners.
For all events, participants are urged to dress for hot weather and bring sunscreen, bug spray and plenty of drinking water. Dogs will be permitted on the trail hike only, must be leashed and must be friendly to people and other dogs. Trail and environmental organizations will have information displays at the event, and refreshments will be available, courtesy of Tallahassee Friends of Our Parks Foundation.
