A bill to increase tuition at state universities in Florida is waiting for Governor Rick Scott's signature.

But a study released Thursday 4-5-12 by Tallahassee Voices shows Floridians are against the bill by a 2 to 1 margin. It's a sentiment FSU students share.

"If the tuition increases, more people will need financial aid which means less potential money for me and other students, which is more out of pocket that not everybody has," says FSU student Melina Palazzolo.

"There's always a way to make this happen.I feel like there are other ways, other things that we can do to not put the majority of the burden on the students," says FSU Grad Student Bob Evans.

More than 300 people were surveyed. Of those surveyed, 56 percent opposed the hike. The bill would increase tuition at state universities by 15 percent

Tallahassee, FL -- April 5, 2012 --

TallahasseeVoices is a pro bono internet survey panel sponsored by Kerr & Downs Research with special media support of WCTV. Survey was conducted February 4th to 25th, 2011. 402 of the 5,000 panel members responded. Results are weighted to reflect the demographics of the 90%+ local residents who have access to the internet at home, work, or school.

By a 2 to 1 margin, residents oppose giving Florida State University and the University of Florida power to raise tuition more than 15% per year.

Phillip Downs, Ph.D., Founder of TallahasseeVoices, states,

“This is a personal issue for many in our community - they either attended or are attending FSU or have children who are attending. Over half of the households in this community have been hit hard by the recession. They are not in the mood for paying higher tuition, and they wonder why college expenses keep rising when their pay is not.”
