Tallahassee Couple Named Philanthropists of the Year

A Tallahassee couple who walked away from two successful businesses to shepherd an animal therapy program were named the capital city's Philanthropists of the Year today.

Chuck and Patty Mitchell not only received accolades from the Big Bend's Association of Fundraising Professionals, but were surprised with volunteering's highest honor ... the President's Volunteer Service Award.

The couple takes its dogs Rikki and Roscoe to cheer patients in hospitals and nursing homes and to help children learn to read. It's just the latest in a long list of giving ventures that earned them this honor on National Philanthropy Day.

WCTV's own Julie Montanaro was named Outstanding Media Personality of the Year for her work in helping numerous charities and encouraging others to give back.

Also receiving awards today: the TMH Foundation, Kiwanis of the Big Bend and the "O Ambassadors" from Oakridge Elementary.
