Some of our local firefighters will soon be certified to respond to major emergencies and disasters - thanks to a special training course.
18 Tallahassee firefighters spent Wednesday training with the Urban Search and Rescue Team, learning to conduct underground rescues. Over the next two weeks, these firefighters will learn how to rescue people at low and high angles and even perform swift water rescues.
LT Scott McAdams of the Tallahassee Fire Department says, "Situations that come up, natural disasters, terrorist acts, anything that requires us to go in with this equipment, with the special training that we have, we have the ability to go in and mitigate the problem."
TFD currently has 68 firefighters trained in these techniques and Thursday, it will officially certify this latest group of 18.
