May 30, 2012 - 9am

Tallahassee firefighters will be on busy street corners this week collecting money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

They will be collecting donations as part of their annual "Fill the Boot" drive today through Friday.

We caught up with them on the corner of Thomasville Road and Village Square Boulevard this morning. They had to pack up and go in a hurry when an emergency call came in.

Money collected in the boots will be donated to MDA during its annual Labor Day Telethon.

TFD Release:

Tallahassee Professional Firefighters #2339 and Tallahassee Fire Department will kick off its "Fill the Boot" drive to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Chief Cindy Dick, Union President Jarvis Bedford, Public Information Officer Mike Bellamy and MDA Coordinator Anthony Espinosa will continue the longstanding tradition of putting the first dollar bill into the fire boot to signal the beginning of the Boot drive. The event will begin on May 30th, Wednesday from 11:00-11:30 am at TFD Station #1 at 327 N. Adams St. Tallahassee, FL 32301.

The ceremony will signal the beginning of Tallahassee's "Fill the Boot" drive, which will take place Wednesday, May 30, through Friday, June 1. Members of the Tallahassee Fire Department will collect donations from passersby at various road intersections around Tallahassee to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Funds raised by the firefighters give MDA, a voluntary health agency, the means to continue providing direct services, research and professional and public health education to children and adults with neuromuscular diseases in Northwest Florida and Southwest Georgia. The International Association of Fire Fighters has been contributing to the organization in various capacities since 1954.

We don't get arrested for "panhandling" as you put it bedsides we have gone through the appropriate channels and have permits and safety equipment. I don't understand the hatred for us in the FD. We do what we do to help people, it's definitely not for the money. Like another comment stated, read the story its for MDA. As for Wakulla, I believe they are volunteers, that is another breed altogether.

I know some in Wakulla who turn on the lights and siren in rush hour on Crawfordville hwy just to not have to wait in traffic. They laugh every time they make cars pull over so they can keep moving. You will see them up the road later getting out of the truck at the firestation near Medart as they were just going back to the station. Funny Huh!

Read the story - they're not collecting for themselves, they're collecting for MDA - Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Do something like have a bake sale, car wash or something other than standing in the middle of the intersection begging for money. They are a distraction at almost every major intersection are are going to get someone realy hurt.

Why does a panhandler have a computer?

Want to donate as love and appreciate fireman. But my money went to pay a government-sponsored revenue extorting red-light camera ticket.
