Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State University may start attracting more Florida residents into the school. They're offering a big deal on tuition that folks around the big bend may want to know about.

Starting this fall, the Blazers will waive Out-Of-State tuition for residents of Leon, Jefferson, Columbia and Baker counties. It's a deal they've already been offering in Hamilton, Madison and Nassau.

"We think the reason we haven't drawn as many students out of those counties is that the Out-Of-State price point is very high. We think offering this border county waiver and the university experience here at Valdosta State will be very attractive to students in north Florida," said Andy Clark with Valdosta State University.

How big of a difference does it make? Say you take five classes in a semester at 3 credit hours each. That's 15 hours.

Out-Of-State tuition would cost you almost $10,000 for that one semester. But In-State tuition costs only $3,500. That's a savings of $6,000 per semester.

That's $48,000 for a standard four year degree. That's enough to buy one or two nice cars. University officials hope that kind of deal can attract more students from the Big Bend.

"Schools like Florida State have capped their enrollment. So we wanted to offer opportunities to students in the Tallahassee area and those other north Florida counties that if Florida State was not an option for them that we may become one," said Clark.

The program took effect this fall. Classes start Monday. Late enrollment ends Friday.
