Tallahassee. Florida - August 29, 2011 -
The smoke you see today lingering in Tallahassee and the surrounding area is from several small wildfires in and around the Apalachicola National Forest. Heavy winds, low humidity and ongoing dry conditions caused several hot spots in wildfires as well as old prescribed fires to rekindle generating heavy smoke.
Smoke accumulating on local roads can create a driving hazard. Motorists are cautioned to drive slowly with lights on while traveling in the area.
The smoke is anticipated to remain through today, tonight and tomorrow. Presently, the fires are under control and, other than the smoke, pose no threat to the local community.
