The Capital Region YMCA will celebrate Flag Day with a dedication and unveiling of a new honorarium for members of the community to celebrate the American flag. Now, members of the community can visit the Parkway Family Y and gather at the flag honorarium in support of the dedicated men and women who have devoted their lives to preserving the spirit and freedom represented by the flag and that we all share as Americans.

The new honorarium was coordinated with Y leaders by 13-year-old Isaiah Springer, who along with his family has been a member of the YMCA since he was 9-months old. Isaiah worked with leaders at the Parkway Y to coordinate a fundraising drive and workday to beautify the flag area as one of his final requirements to receive his designation as an Eagle Scout.

"Isaiah is a wonderful young man who we have watched grow up at the Y," said Capital Region YMCA CEO, Ken Franklin. "He is a shining example of the importance the Y puts on encouraging all of our members to find ways to support our local community through Healthy Living, Youth Development and Social Responsibility."

The new honorarium will be unveiled in a dedication ceremony on Flag Day, June 14 at 10:00 a.m. at the Parkway Family YMCA located at 2001 Appalachee Parkway.

The YMCA is the nation's leading nonprofit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. With three locations in Tallahassee -- Northwest, the Parkway and Southwood, the Capital Region YMCA works with the local community and its leaders to make accessible the support and opportunities that empower people and communities to learn, grow and thrive. With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the YMCA nurtures the potential of every youth and teen, improves the nation's health and well-being, and provides opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

Florida Knights of Columbus to Honor Flag on Flag Day

The Knights of Columbus has instituted a new program to venerate the National Flag on Flag Day nation-wide. 2011 was designated a "pilot" year for the program, with California, New Jersey and Florida selected to participate in the program on its inaugural year. This program has expanded nation-wide in 2012. All Tallahasseeans and visitors are invited to participate in this event.

The Florida District Knights will host a brief ceremony to honor our national flag and the pledge of allegiance on Flag Day, Thursday, June 14, 2012. The ceremony will begin at noon on the Monroe St. side of the Old Capitol, with a color guard presenting the colors, followed by a brief narrative on the pledge of allegiance, at the conclusion of which all participants and guests will be invited to share in reciting the pledge of allegiance.

The colors will then be retired, and the ceremony will conclude. It is expected that the ceremony will last about 20 minutes.
