Cairo, GA- Legendary Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia and folks in Grady County want to make sure he forever has a special place in the community; 'A Diamond Affair'' is just one step in doing so.
The two day event, which kicks off Friday night with a sold out tribute dinner, will not only celebrate Robinson's accomplishments but also the renaming of the Boy's and Girls Club to, 'The Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club of Cairo-Grady County.'
Nola Daughtry, with the Boys & Girls Club of Cairo-Grady County, says the partnership is ideal because both Robinson and the Club have a strong emphasis on citizenship, leadership and breaking barriers.
On Saturday morning, a new youth baseball field on the Club grounds will be unveiled.
"We'll have free hot-dogs and drinks and popcorn for everybody to kind of just sit around and enjoy and we'll have activities for the kids," said Daughtry.
With a new name also comes new programs, like 'Breaking Barriers,' which will teach kids Robinson's nine key characteristics.
"The children will be doing a nine-week program and we'll be dealing with citizenship, teamwork, determination, leadership skills, and several others," said Jeffery Brown, the unit director for the Club.
The children will then implement those characteristics through community service.
Organizers say, it's a Diamond Affair, you won't want to miss.
Robinson's daughter Sharon is expected to attend the two day event! As well as celebrity athletes like five time olympian Teresa Edwards and professional boxer Evander Holyfield.
