Valdosta, Georgia- August 25, 2012

It's just like re-living prom night all over again. Except, well this time there is an open bar. And the last time the Prom King and Queen were in high school they were probably rocking their flairs.

It's a fundraiser for the United Way, America's largest charity organization. Their annual fundraising campaign kicked off Friday.

"It almost feels like (my) first prom, because it's so much fun," said David Howington D.M.D. who was a prom goer. "And I'm not in my momma's 1986 Honda Accord (this time)."

"We thought this would be a little something different," said Bobby Yarbrough, Director of the Greater Valdosta United Way. "Everybody has a dance, but we thought we would put a different spin on it and go back to high school."

"Just kind of go back into the 80s. The make up, the hair, the whole nine yards," said Christy Howell, prom goer.

The United Way has posted their sign out in front of the Old Courthouse in downtown Valdosta for everyone to see. It says their goal is to raise $1,000,000. But the meter still stands unmoved at zero because they just got started.

But this prom night will sure help; the dance raised $15,000.

"We provide services and programs that center on education, income, health and homelessness. So the money raised here stays here," said Yarbrough.

The campaign runs till early January.

The Prom King and Queen were announced late in the evening. The Prom King was J.D. Yeager and the Prom Queen was Jennifer Steedley.

The event was held in The Loft just above City Market. It was hosted by City Market and the food was catered by Jessie's Eats & Treats.
