Officials say Atlanta Medical Center has become the metro area's second Level 1 trauma facility in a state some experts say is lacking in such care.
Officials say gaining the new Level 1 status is the culmination of years of work, including adding new equipment and more specialty surgeons. Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta is the other Level 1 trauma center in the metro area.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the downtown Atlanta hospital treats trauma patients from more than 50 hospitals across Georgia. Atlanta Medical Center trauma coordinator Rochella Mood says it is the state's third-busiest trauma center.
Kevin Bloye, a spokesman for the Georgia Hospital Association, says the new designation is a positive sign for rapidly growing metro Atlanta. Some experts say more trauma centers are needed in the state. Many South Georgians do not have very easy access to trauma facilities.

This was an interesting article. If everyone will remember, this issue was on the ballot in November. GA asked for a $10 increase in tag registration fees to pay for increased trauma funding in the state and it was voted down. I wonder how many are complaining about there not being trauma centers in south GA when we had our chance to try and fix the problem and we chose to say no. It was only going to cost everyone $10 a YEAR more for their vehicle tag but that obviously was too high a price. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the average distance to a trauma center in south GA is 50 miles. That could be the difference between life and death. Perhaps next time that should be the prevalent thought and not how much it costs. Heaven forbid you ever need one but it would be nice to have one close by. I am willing to pay $10 more per year to have that peace of mind. How about you?
