Law Makers Cracking Down On Animal Fighting

It's well known, animal fighting is illegal in the U.S. But attending a fight is not.

Now that exception may be about to change due to legislation making its rounds in Washington to outlaw even being a spectator at an animal fight.

It's big news in Southeastern states including Florida and Georgia which are known to have a high concentration of dog fighting. Folks we talked to at Lowndes County Animal Wellfare agree with the bill.

"Spectating in any animal fighting should be outlawed. We believe that anyone who is supporting animal cruelty in that fashion should be prosecuted," said Director of Lowndes Animal Wellfare Linda Patelski.

If the bill passes, just being at an animal fight will be a felony.
The penalty.. up to a year in jail. But the law will even make it illegal to take a minor to a fight. The punishment for that, up to three years in jail.

"These people don't really care for the animals. They just want them to basically bolster their own egos," Patelski said.

A Humane Society spokesman tells us that NFL star Michael Vick himself is supporting the legislation. He spent 21 months in jail for dog fighting. Vick says he was taken to dog fights when he was a child.

The Humane Society wants to remind you, anyone who provides information leading to an arrest for animal fighting could receive up to a $5,000 reward.

Never in the history of government has legislating morality worked. It won't this time either. As for Michael Vick . . . he has substantial financial motivation to hold the perspective he does. It sure as heck isn't because he has upstanding morals. They were demonstrated clearly already a while back. The guy is nothing but a pond scum level thug.

Agreed. I remember reading something a while back where a group contacted Vick about doing some work locally to promote alternatives to fighting pits (such as pulling, obedience, agility) and found him not only unresponsive but downright surly. It was clear he was only going through the motions because he's trying to salvage his career and perform his court-mandated services.

I had a friend who filmed dog fights as an undercover agent 20 years ago. This is an old, horrible, sport. My friend told me to NEVER advertise free pets without checking out the homes they went to because the dog fighters would collect the free pets and use them as bait to train the dogs to fight. These same sickos would steal your pets from your yard with the same goal in mind.

I attend animal fights all the time. I have squirrels in my backyard who beat each others' brains in and I never try to stop it.

Domestic Battery is a misdemeanor but molesting a crab trap and watching dogs fight is a felony?

They can leave the situation, the dog cannot. Taking someones crab trap is stealing their livelyhood!

Gosh, I wish I could get my street address to you. It would tickle me pink to have you come try to shoot my bulldog. I have little doubt you would make fine fertilizer after you composted a while.

Yes, absolutely spectating at a dog fight should be a 3rd degree felony. Taking a minor to a dog fight should be a 1st degree felony. As should fighting dogs.

NARK = Person happy to allow thugs, gangs, drug dealers to run rampant in their communities with no consequences. Why are good citizens denigrated this way?
