Valdosta, GA -
More than five hundred kids between the ages of five and twelve received backpacks full of school supplies Saturday at the Tools for School giveaway... all of it was for free of charge.
One woman who took part in the giveaway said "it's a good thing to be able to help the kids that can't afford it."
But there was a lot more at the Mildred Hunter Community Center than just school supplies. Musical chairs, face painting and exercise classes were all part of the program. Getting kids active was a top priority.
Marquis King took part in the giveaway and said "people need to feel good about themselves and when they exercise and they look good, they'll do good."
The event was hosted by the Valdosta Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority. The Valdosta Fire Department and many more took part in the giveaway... which participants emphasized was not to be confused with a handout.
Solomon Thomas also took part in the event and said "school supplies can't make you do anything. you have to learn how to do things on your own because you're not going to have help in life."
The American Red Cross, Wiregrass Technical College and Adel South Health District also took part in the event.
