Thomasville, GA -- April 11, 2012 --
A new program that started in Thomasville is helping to feed hungry children right here in our own backyard.
The Backpack Buddies Foundation started in 2011 with the goal of providing food for kids to take home on the weekends. The children are provided their own backpack or bag full of food that they receive on Fridays and bring back on Monday.
"Our foundation is really funded by grants and receiving donations. It's our small effort to do what we can to help aleviate childhood hunger," said Marion Neil, Vice President of the foundation.
Harper Elementary in Thomasville was the first school Backpack Buddies helped. They started with seven bags a week and are now up to 79. Teachers say they noticed improved school performance.
