Valdosta, GA - Benchmark Human Services hosted its first Community Collaborative Thursday at the Rainwater Conference Center.
Hospitals, law enforcement, schools, and other South Georgia organizations that deal with mental health, attended the event. The move comes after the closing of Southwestern State Hospital last year. The event's organizer says the collaborative is a way for all groups involved in the recovery process to address issues, concerns, and best practices
"It takes more than just one agency that can address the needs of mental health services. Sometimes we get in to silos, where we are working separately, maybe providing fairly good services, but if we can get all the services together, and you're communicating very well for the individual or individuals in crisis, then it's a much better way to approach things.", says George Harris, Benchmark's State Director for Georgia.
Harris says he hopes the takeaway will be that all mental health related groups in South Georgia can work together to help those in need.
