Black Colleges-Nursing

ALBANY, Ga. (AP) -- An advocacy group for public historically
black colleges says a four-year nursing program under consideration
for approval at 2-year Darton College would needlessly compete with
two nearby 4-year HBCU programs.

The Legal Defense Coalition for the Preservation of Public HBCUs
is joining the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People in their opposition to approval of the program. Board of
Regents spokesman John Millsaps told The Albany Herald earlier this
year that Darton's request for a four-year program is currently
under review.

Legal Defense spokesman John M. Clark says the regents should
not consider approving such a program with a "fully capable and
functioning nursing program not even 10 miles away" at Albany
State University. Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus
also has a program.
