Thursday afternoon, the body of Alceno Brooks, 71, was found in an abandoned building just behind the old Tommy Griner dealership off Ashley Street in Valdosta, said Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine.

Brooks likely died anywhere between 10 days and two weeks ago, according to Lowndes County Coroner Bill Watson.

A hospital ID band around his arm, reveals he was treated for hypertension at South Georgia Medical Center in November and released, said Watson.

"When a homeless person dies, or if anyone dies, that really does raise an issue of how everyone should come together and try to combat homelessness," said Kelly Strozier, a case manager with the South Georgia Coalition to End Homelessness.

Both Lowndes investigators and Watson say no foul play is suspected and that Brooks died of natural causes.

Lowdes County Sheriff's Office Release:

Sheriff Prine asked that additional information pertaining to the discovery of the deceased person.

On Thursday, December 16 workers at 407 North Ashley Street, a property which the county recently purchased, discovered a person whom they originally thought to be asleep. With the assistance of the Valdosta Police Department Detective Bureau and the Lowndes – Valdosta Crime Lab the scene was closely examined. After a complete examination it was determined that no foul play existed and the person died as a result of natural causes. The family of the deceased has been notified.

I have a much better idea. Start making families accountable. We already have a system in place to protect children lets put one on the table to protect the elderly and those with mental and physical health issues. If this man is your family member you should be ashamed and the way he died is a mark on your name....
