From March 30 through April 2, 2014, the Valdosta Police Department was assessed by two assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) under the new Gold Standard Process, which included standards file reviews and intense interviews with agency personnel, other organizations, the news media, and members of the community who the police department serves.
On April 2, the team completed the assessment. During an exit interview with Valdosta Chief of Police Brian Childress and police department command staff, the two assessors indicated they would be highly recommending reaccreditation for the police department at the CALEA Conference in Schaumburg, Illinois on July 22-26, 2014. Furthermore, the assessment team indicated they felt the police department was “one of the best agencies” they have ever assessed, praising the way employees took ownership of the process and the overall ideals of the CALEA process. The assessment team identified no negative issues and found the police department in compliance with all applicable accreditation standards.
“I want to express my sincere appreciation for the tremendous support of the community, Mayor John Gayle, members of Valdosta City Council, and City Manager Larry Hanson,” said Chief Childress. “The men and women of the Valdosta Police Department are the best in the business. They are dedicated, hardworking, and true professionals. They deserve all the credit for the success during the recent inspection.”
Childress also gave special recognition to Capt. Bobbi McGraw and Lt. Aaron Kirk who managed the accreditation process for the department. During the recent inspection, there were no returns or changes required, in which Chief Childress attributes to the work of Capt. McGraw and Lt. Kirk for effectively monitoring the process for the department.
“It is rare for agencies to go through an accreditation inspection and not have a single standards file returned for additional documentation or to require a policy change,” said City Manager Larry Hanson. “Chief Childress and his team have demonstrated great leadership in raising the bar to CALEA Gold Standard Accreditation. This process validates to our citizens the outstanding Police Department we have and the high quality of service provided to our citizens each and every day.”
