Cairo's Kids Against Hunger Fighting Local and World-Wide Starvation

Cairo's Kids Against Hunger works to feed starving children -- both in Grady County, and around the world.

Organizers say they've launched a new campaign, called 'Project Hope 2011', in an effort to raise enough money to package 20 pallets of food in just one month -- which is more than 10 times their average monthly output.

Says Co-Founder Melvin Horne, "[The Kids Against Hunger Chapter of Cairo] has just taken a life of its own -- it's fun involving people who want to find some way to participate, and then be satisfied that their participation, you know, is worthy."

Kids Against Hunger was started in 1999 and, according to the organization's website, it has packed and shipped enough food to feed hundreds of millions of needy children around the world.

Horne says the Cairo chapter has been open for seven years, and in that time has mobilized thousands of volunteers to pack many more bags of food.

He says being able to send food to the hungry after natural diasasters -- such as the tsunami in Indonesia in 2004, and last year's earthquakes in Haiti -- is just one of the ways their small operation is able to give back globally.

KAH in Cairo also donates thousands of meals a month to south Georgia food banks and soup kitchens.

Guess they've never heard "Charity begins at home." before. There are too many homeless and hungry in the US to be sending food overseas.
