Valdosta, Georgia - August 15, 2011

With books in tow, thousands of Valdosta State students began the academic year today.

They're immersed in over 120 majors and officials say enrollment is up for VSU's graduate program.

"A lot of that is students coming back to get their masters or we have a doctorate program now in public administration," explains Thressea Boyd, the spokesperson for VSU. "And it's actually becoming very popular not only with people locally but we actually have people from California and other parts of the country."

VSU estimates that about 3,000 students are at the university this year. An official count will be released in October.
