Valdosta, GA - Lowndes and Valdosta have been squaring off on the gridiron for more than 40 years.

Recently, Lowndes has had the upper hand winning the last six games between the two teams.

This week I got a chance to speak with the first Lowndes coach to ever beat Valdosta.

Coach Joe Wilson was an assistant coach at Valdosta looking for a head coaching position. He says when Lowndes offered he took it and says it paid off.

"Lowndes had always had good kids and always had good coaches, but they didn't have a mean old man to whip them into shape so to speak. We did that and things worked out real well," said Wilson.

Wilson's first year he went 8 and 2, his second year the vikings beat Valdosta and in 1980 Wilson lead his team to State and won.
