Cook County, GA - August 3, 2011
Forty-five students have been selected for the Cook County High School Student Leadership Team.
By mentoring incoming freshman, administrators say the program helped raise the graduation rate from 67 percent last year to 77 percent this year.
"By the time they get out of high school, they've worked with people, they've served people and they've learned what serving is all about," says Myra Fussel, Cook County's graduation coach.
Zach Folsom, a member of the group, adds, "As a senior, I know that most freshman look up to the upper class men and you have an important role in shaping the way they grow up."
Every student leader had to be recommended by a teacher to join the team.
