Copper Stolen From Valdosta Library AC Units

Valdosta, Georgia - August 19, 2011 -

The Valdosta Police Department confirms that sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, an air-conditioning unit at the Southside Library, 527 Griffin Avenue, was broken into. Copper wires and pipes were stolen.

No one was hurt and police are treating it as an isolated case.

    If and when the thugs are caught, they should also be charged with a Federal crime. It is against EPA regulations to knowingly vent refrigerant gases into the atmosphere. There is up-to a $25,000 fine for each time it is done. I see two units in the photo, so that would be a $50,000 fine.
